Sound-Bound Amulets marked another ceremonial opening for the FIELD MEETING: Thinking Pilgrimage program. Conceived and led by Farah Salem on the rooftop of an ancient fort overlooking the walled city of Khiva, the gathering functioned as a somatic and sonic rite of preparation for the journey ahead. Drawing from her interdisciplinary practice and ancestral traditions of the Arabian Peninsula, participants were invited into an expressive and therapeutic ritual of creating their own intentional amulets to carry throughout the journey, beginning with an extended meditation accompanied by a pre-recorded soundscape composed with sculptural talismanic instruments of Salemi’s own making. Layered within the composition were archival recordings of women-led healing ceremonies, alongside poetry, chant, and vocal invocations. Within each amulet, three selected names from the 99 Names of Allah were embedded, opening space for reflection on intention-setting and on seeking protection, wisdom, and truth within one’s spiritual journey. The triangular form of the amulet echoed a reconstructed sculptural instrument embedded within the soundscape, creating a dialogue between sound, form, and ritual gesture. The ceremony concluded with a purification rite using aromatic incense traditionally associated with cleansing and consecration. Each person carried their amulet across landscapes and encounters throughout the journey, holding their personal questions, qualities, and protective aspirations forward with faith into the unknown.
