Throughout the FIELD MEETING: Thinking Pilgrimage journey across pilgrimage sites, museums, and road-based settings, Sam Samiee offered a series of performative activations—recitations of poetry, storytelling, songs, and literary mappings in response to the geographies, images, and texts encountered along the way. He consistently treated Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and broader Central Asia not as separate national histories, but as a shared Persianate–Turko–Islamicate intellectual geography shaped by movement—trade routes, manuscript culture, Sufi lineages, and translation systems. Working through Persianate-Turkic speculative narratives, psychoanalysis, and ethical-aesthetic inquiry, his engagement offered a lens for reading across art historical frameworks and Islamic intellectual traditions, while revisiting and re-signifying epistemic lineages. Within this field, Manichaeism emerges as a premodern connective system across Eurasia, and Adab as a mode of conduct in which ethics and aesthetics are inseparable, grounding perception, behavior, and form within a unified sensorial and intellectual orientation. Sam’s contributions carried a palpable energy, attuning the group to the region’s deep aesthetic and intellectual legacies and their resonances across world civilizations. For many within the group, including members of the wider Central Asian diaspora, his passionate musings on religion, history, myth, philosophy, psychoanalysis, music, and literature channeled a way of reading living systems of thought that emphasized felt knowledge as a vital dimension of experience—one that is sensed, embodied, and lived as much as it is understood.
