FIELD MEETING Take 7: Thinking Pilgrimage | Uzbekistan
Shezad Dawood

The Fourth Way
A movement meditation on September 2, 2025 | Khiva
On a cool, sunny early morning in Khiva, within the historic city walls that have stood for centuries, Shezad Dawood led a special movement session for the FIELD MEETING group. Set against the weathered architecture of the old fortifications, the exercise unfolded in direct relation to the surrounding site, where layered histories of passage, defense, and settlement formed an active spatial backdrop for collective practice. Drawing on early 20th-century philosopher G.I. Gurdjieff’s Fourth Way principles alongside Daoist practices of sticking and moving, the session took shape as a non-verbal, somatic exploration of attention, rhythm, and relational awareness. Participants were guided through structured yet fluid sequences of movement that interrupted habitual patterns of posture and perception, encouraging heightened sensitivity to balance, timing, and proximity. Emphasis was placed on presence and collective coherence, as individuals continuously adjusted to one another in motion. The exercises functioned as a grounding entry point to the day’s program, a transitional space balancing quiet mind, group exchange, and engagement with the pilgrimage sites on the agenda. The practice also echoed recurring concerns in Dawood’s artistic work, where interconnectedness, altered states of perception, and embodied knowledge recur across film, installation, and collaborative formats.
