During the Thinking Pilgrimage in Uzbekistan, artist Zolayzha Sherzad offered a quietly profound activation, inviting participants to translate their inner journeys into form. Each of us was asked to draw a symbol, word, or image that embodied what pilgrimage meant personally—an act of reflection moving beyond language and into intuition. The activation unfolded in resonance with the surrounding sacred landscape. The Hazrat Daud Cave, one of Uzbekistan’s most evocative pilgrimage sites located in the hills south of Samarkand, is associated with the prophet David (Daud in Islamic tradition). The cave draws visitors seeking blessing, reflection, and a physical encounter with devotion—an atmosphere that subtly informed the contemplative nature of the exercise. These individual expressions were then gathered into a collective tapestry—a living archive of shared yet deeply personal narratives. The drawings will be brought to life through embroidery by her team at Zarif Design in Kabul, where traditional Afghan craftsmanship meets contemporary storytelling. In this gesture, the ephemeral becomes enduring: a convergence of voices, stitched across distance and culture, carrying the ruh—the spirit—of the pilgrimage forward.
