Talking Peers | Arts for Afghanistan
Urgent Call for Action | Leeza Ahmady
In the aftermath of regime change in Afghanistan in August 2021, curator Leeza Ahmady participated in dozens of public and closed-door discussions in partnership with cultural and academic institutions around the world, including engagements by invitation of Hou Hanru at MAXXI – Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo and the University of Rome. These conversations reflected on ways the international arts community could support Afghan artists and cultural workers during a period of profound transition. Drawing on ongoing dialogue with artists and colleagues across the region and diaspora, Ahmady highlighted the importance of sustaining artistic voices, preserving cultural continuity, and creating new avenues for visibility and exchange. Her talks encouraged museums, universities, and arts organizations to move beyond symbolic solidarity toward practical action — including residencies, teaching opportunities, and pathways to safety — emphasizing the role of cultural institutions in building long-term networks of care, solidarity, and creative possibility.
